Need Your Help

Well, I'm an avid reader and I especially enjoy books that inspire me to honor Christ more and more with my life as a mother who homeschools. I've been flying through my pile of books and am ready for some suggestions for a few good reads.

So, leave a comment with your favorite authors, books, magazines, etc. They don't have to be "just for those who homeschool". I enjoy biographies of amazing Christians, inspiring true stories, encouraging reading material of any sort so long as it honors the Lord.

You can leave as many suggestions as you would like - the more the better! The reader who leaves the most suggestions will "win" a copy of a book (I have 2 options so I'll let the winner decide which they would prefer).

I guess I can't really have an open-ended contest, so the contest will end of Saturday, February 6th (which is also my hubby's birthday, so feel free to give me some great ideas to make his big day loads of fun!)

    Ok -- I found the book series I was telling you about this morning. It's the "Yada Yada Prayer Group" by Neta Jackson. It's Christian Fiction, which I don't normally read, but Logan's teacher at the time (Caleb's teacher this year) said I should read it and I found myself hooked to the series and really interested in watching this circle of women's friendship grow & change throughout each book! There are 7 books in the series -- and you do need to read them in order. They are all available from the library as well -- that's where I got them from. They 7 books in the series are:

    1 - The Yada Yada Prayer Group
    2 - The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Down
    3 - The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Real
    4 - The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Tough
    5 - The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Caught
    6 - The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Rolling
    7 - The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Decked Out

    Also -- the first Gracia Burnham book is "In The Presence of My Enemies" -- is that the one you've read? There is also "To Fly Again"! Have you read that one? I'm fairly certain we own that. I will go downstairs and look for it -- if we do have it, I will bring it to church with me and let you borrow it! :)

    Hi again, Jan!

    Ok -- I DO have Gracia Burnham's "To Fly Again", so I'll bring that if you wish to read it. Here are a few others you can check into to see if you wish to read them as well. I own these and would be happy to bring them to you if you want:

    1. "Unlikely Angel" by Ashley Smith -- about the girl taken hostage in Atlanta by the guy who open fired in a courthouse in Atlanta and was later freed after reading him part of her "The Purpose Driven Life" bible study.

    2. "The Last Dance but Not the Last Song" by Renee Bondi (foreward writte by Joni Eareckson Tada) -- this lady became a quadriplegic at age 29 and tells about her accident and story.

    3. "Inside My Heart" by Robin McGraw (Dr. Phil's wife) -- she tells about choosing t live with her life with passion and purpose.

    Well,,,hmmm...obviously anything by Janette Oke, Ted Dekker, or Tolkein. Sigmound Brouwer is one that I have been reading a lot of recently. Hank Hanegraff has written some decent novels...Can't think of the author, but the book was named Michal (wives of king david series)...that one was pretty good I thought. I am re-reading When You Rise Up for about the 10th time right now. (I always tend to read it this time of year...haha) Ben said he's been reading Stephen R Lawhead lately...anyway...don't know if that is anything new...I'm going to keep watching the comments as well, I am always looking for new authors, because once I find one, I tend to read everything they have written. Anyway...see ya!

    Thank you Janette and Rebecca - These are AWESOME ideas, exactly what I was looking for. Janette, the first book "In the Presence of My Enemies" is the book that we own, but I haven't read "To Fly Again" so I'll look into that one. I remember when Ashley Smith's book came out but never read it; I haven't read the Renee Bondi book or the Robin McGraw book, but look forward to both of those.
    Rebecca - Well, believe it or not, one year we did the Lord of the Rings trilogy as a family read aloud, and trust me, that is A LOT to read aloud!! But I should re-read The Hobbit before the movie comes out, so it's a good thing you gave me a Tolkein reminder. I haven't read any Ted Dekker, not much Janette Oke, no Brouwer and I love Hank the Bible Answer Man, but haven't read his fiction. I have always been fascinated with Michal, so I'll hunt that one down. "Rise Up" - the homeschooling book by Jr? If so, I agree, it's worth reading every single year!! Tell Ben I'll look for Lawhead.

    Oooh! Could I borrow someone's copy of Gracia's books? I got to see her speak this fall and would like to uhm, at least start her books! :)

I Gotta Let You Know Two Very Important Things (Seriously, They Are Truly Important For You To Know...)

 First, a big --- fat --- hefty dose of encouragement for you, my wonderful homeschooling friend.  As you get ready to roll into the fall of 2020...stop for just one moment and hear what God's Word has to say to you right here, right now, on the brink of the last stretch of what has possibly been the most turn-your-whole-world-upside-down year ever.  Psalm 125:2 - As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people both now and forevermore.   You are surrounded.  Completely & totally, that's exactly how surrounded you are.  Going into the great unknown as, say, a working mom whose children are going to be doing school online at home (or a working mom homeschooling and working from home for just the next several months, but not planning on continuing to home educate after things "normalize" again).  This is God's promise just for you as you embark upon this season of life. My Preferred Bible Reading Plan

We all know that reading our Bibles is a key part of living a healthy life as a follower of Jesus. But busy homeschool moms may, at times, struggle to know what part of the Bible to read on any given day. Some people read the Bible through, Genesis to Revelation, and when they finish simply start over. Others have reading plans that follow along with the sermons their pastor is currently preaching. And yet others find themselves "stuck in the Psalms", since they're not quite sure what to read. I'm not going to tell you how many chapters a day you should read, or that you need to do exactly what I do. I'm just going to share what has worked for me, and hopefully encourage you to get into the Word using some type of plan ~ because every homeschool mom knows what happens to our plans when we fail to create a plan, right?! Do You Homeschool? Then You Need to Read This Article!

Whether you have been homeschooling for a month, a year, or a decade, you've inevitably faced the "questions". Questions about socialization, college, athletics, driver's ed, high-school biology, etc. etc. etc. and so on..... It seems as if homeschoolers are ripe for questions from day one; but the flip side seems to be that there really is no flip side. We are expected to patiently answer any and all questions, smiling politely and pretending we've never heard this line of questioning before. But when we try to ask a few questions about, say, public schools as a whole or the issue of private schools being used as a last-ditch landing spot for students expelled from public school, well...ahem...we're pretty much told to keep quiet. Everything by Mary DeMuth

The book Everything by Mary DeMuth became a "keeper" for me almost as soon as I began reading. Mary sugarcoats nothing in her attempt to make Jesus' gospel what it rightly is ~ and as you probably guessed from the title of her book, it rightly is about everything. Eighteen chapters, three sections, one-hundred and ninety-eight pages...if you take the time to delve into them you will grow exponentially in your walk with the Lord. In Everything Mary calls us out, calls us higher, and admonishes us with honesty and openness. Sharing from her heart and relying heavily on the truth that is God's Word, she sets things straight. There aren't just one or two things about this book that I have taken to heart; and there aren't just a couple of quotes I could share here. The book in it's entirety is a game-changer!
