Loving God with your time.
Is time truly of the essence? I think it is. Because where our minutes go, there our hours and our days go. How we spend our time is literally how we invest our time. (Read that again.)
As mothers, if time really is our biggest investment opportunity, is there a way to get the best possible ROI on our investment?
Yes. The answer is absolutely yes.
When we apply the words of Jesus from Matthew 26:36-39, we find our template for wisely investing the minutes that make up our days.
Here are Jesus’ words from the New Living Translation:
36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”
37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
Is the Lord your God? And if He is, are you loving Him with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind?
Is your heart attuned to His? Do your thoughts center on Him throughout the day? Is He the primary focus of your life, inside and out?
Do you love others well? And considering this text in light of the concept of Biblical motherhood, do you love the people in your own household the same way you love yourself?
Do they know you love God first and foremost and most of all, above anyone else? And do they know how much you really, truly love them?
Are you dying to yourself and putting their needs first - for no other reason than because Jesus said that loving your neighbor as yourself is a key part of what the entire law and the demands of the prophets hang upon?
The subtitle to this post is “Loving God with your time” and one of the best ways to love the Lord God Most High with our minutes is by doing what He says to do in relation to Him and in relation to others. Because love costs us something when it comes to our time. It’s expensive. It’s an investment because we give something away before we see a return on it.
We simply cannot love our neighbor, or our children, as we love ourselves without spending time.
If you pray for them, it takes time. If you prepare a meal for them, it takes time. If you put down your phone and listen as they tell you all about their latest interest (in ridiculous detail and with no rush to get to the point), it takes time.
Love takes time.
So let me encourage you once again to love God first and foremost, and to love your children as you love yourself - which is to be a healthy kind of love that does not neglect their true needs and some of their wants, as well.
If you want to grow as a mother this February, try loving your children as you love yourself while also loving the Lord your God daily and with intention, focusing your thoughts on Him, desiring to know and do His perfect and pleasing will, and giving Him your whole heart.
Thanks for taking a few moments to read this post. And thank you for being a Biblically-sound mom to your child/ren. It is making a difference for today, for tomorrow, and for eternity.
Happy Homeschooling!
